Between 2013 and 2015, the Commission has planned a number of special events, programs and activities designed to increase public awareness and educate students about the importance of the Emancipation Proclamation. Legacy products and keepsakes commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation include: CDs, a poster, bookmarks, and cards depicting the commemorative plaques honoring the African Americans elected to the Virginia Constitutional Convention of 1867–1868 and the General Assembly during Reconstruction.
Unveiling of the commemorative plaques was held in September 2013 at the State Capitol.
